The Online Communications Coordinator will be responsible for managing the website and social media for the Geneva based Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), as well as for editing and producing communications materials for online and traditional usage.
Initially this will be a parttime (60% ) position with potential to increase to a full time position later in 2016. This position is only open for candidates with a Swiss, EU or EFTA nationality.
Overall responsibilities
- Contribute to and implement IDMC’s communications and online strategy
- Provide solid in-house editorial support for materials featured on the website and social media (including speeches, articles, talking points, and drafting/editing blog posts)
- Develop communications materials (brochures, newsletters, press packs)
- Manage and grow all digital media channels (social media, website and newsletters)
- Maintain and manage website maintenance and future modifications/enhancements
- Collaborate with IDMC staff to materials are aligned with wider strategic research/policy objectives
Specific responsibilities
Contribute to and implement IDMC’s communications strategy
a. Produce press releases and background documents linked to global and thematic reports, including arranging press conferences
b. Maintain relationships with relevant international and national journalists
c. Manage and maintain journalist database
d. Monitor and report on performance of press work both internally, and to donors
e. Regularly update staff on news cycles and emerging issues of public concernProvide solid in-house editorial support (including speeches, talking points, donor letters and drafting/editing blog posts)
a. Manage the editorial component of the IDMC blog
b. Actively seek internal and external contributors for the IDMC blog
c. Draft talking points for members of the Management Team when needed
d. Create and maintain forward planning media, events and messaging calendarDevelop communication materials (brochures, press packs etc)
a. Provide all editorial copy for communications literature and campaignsManage and grow all digital media channels (social media, website and newsletters)
a. Ongoing engagement with IDMCs audience on our social media channels
b. Write and deliver IDMCs newsletters to diverse and targeted audiences
c. Manage IDMCs contact database, and ensure consistent high quality in all engagement with our partners, stakeholders and digital audiences
d. Prepare all materials for the website via the CMS, ensuring good web standards in terms of optimisation
e. Engage with influential bloggers/tweeters and build relationships and partnerships with social media units in partner organisations to amplify IDMC messagingMaintain and manage website maintenance and future modifications/enhancements
a. Manage website maintenance and relationship with website developers.
b. Manage any planned updates, enhancements and new functionalities.Collaborate with IDMC staff to ensure digital outreach is aligned with wider strategic research/policy objectives
a. Provide internal training and support on social media, including ensuring adherence to IDMC social media guidelines and the code of conduct
b. Take part in publication planning meetings to ensure digital outreach strategies are in line with research and analysis messages and strategies
Generic professional competencies:
• University degree or the equivalent professional qualification in relevant subject
• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in communications for an international organisation
• Proven track record in delivering accurate and impactful editorial copy
• Proven ability to analyse complex information from different sources and synthesise this information into concise, jargon-free press releases, articles, blogs, speeches and talking points
• Professional experience of managing web and digital media platforms, including demonstrable experience in audience growth and engagement on social media
• Proven ability to write for digital audiences in a way that is both accurate and engaging
Context/Specific skills, knowledge and experience:
• Previous working experience within the humanitarian sector preferred
• Experience of working sensitively and responsibly on complex issues
• Excellent verbal communications skills, and an ability to operate at all levels within the NRC and IDMC organisation(s)
